We are looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic Embedded Systems Hardware Engineer to join our team in our Reading, UK office to help deliver the next generation of products in to the motorsport market.

The Role

Control is looking for an Embedded Systems Hardware Engineer to join our growing engineering team to develop a range of motorsport and automotive communication devices. Working alongside the embedded software team you will be a key figure in the entire product life cycle from inception through development to production.

An experienced engineer in electronic hardware design, with a good grounding in embedded systems is what is needed, someone who has previously designed products for manufacture, ideally in the motorsport/automotive environment, and someone used to working to deadlines. A flexible, can-do attitude in this high paced industry, embracing challenges and helping Control continue to be the leading cellular telemetry manufacturer.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Architectural development of embedded electronic systems.
  • Circuit design, analysis and documentation, working closely with the software development teams to ensure optimal component selection and integration.
  • Design debugging, verification and validation testing.
  • Ownership of designs, devising solutions and solving problems as they arise.
  • Appropriate documentation of the design to allow long term support of the product
  • Identify areas for improvement including tools, techniques and processes.
  • Organise procurement, manufacture and assembly.
  • Manage and support suppliers and any third party design partners


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors Electrical/Electronic Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of two years commercial experience.
  • Architectural development of electronic systems.
  • PCB design, layout and routing.
  • Schematic capture.
  • Experience working with SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, PCIe, RS232 and Ethernet.
  • Use of microcontrollers with integrated peripheral functions.
  • Designing low voltage power supplies, both linear and switched-mode.
  • Experience taking a design from architecture through to production
  • Testing and debugging.
  • Experience using PCB layout viewers, ODB++ & gerber viewers.
  • Other desirable skills and experience would be advantageous:
    • Experience working with NXP processors, specifically the i.MX range.
    • Experience using Altium 365.
    • Any experience or knowledge of embedded Linux.
    • Designing for automotive environments.
    • Product qualification; EMC and environmental testing.
    • Use of common lab bench equipment; scopes, signal generators, DMMs, etc.
    • Soldering of through-hole and SMT components.
    • Reliability analysis, FMEA.
